UPDATE: Yesterday afternoon, NOW issued what appears to be an apology, well sort of if you can even call it that... Read it here.
Bill Maher has long been known for making outlandish, ridiculous comments; it's just what he does. Although I disagree with most of most of what Maher says, I am a strong believer in a person's right to the First Amendment. Freedom of speech is the cornerstone of what makes American the great country it is. While I believe Maher has a right to express himself freely, it is clear that he crossed the line when he made the following sexist, disgusting comment on his HBO show Friday night:
"Did you hear this – Sarah Palin finally heard what happened in Japan and she’s demanding that we invade ‘Tsunami,’” Maher said. “I mean she said, ‘These ‘Tsunamians’ will not get away with this.’ Oh speaking of dumb tw**s, did you..."
As a woman, I am deeply offended by his comment. In making such a comment, Maher is showing his true light as a sexist jerk. I'm sorry, but I do not find comments like this to be at all funny. Perhaps the biggest problem lies with the fact that The National Organization for Women (NOW) who once again is remaining silent when a conservative woman is degraded on national television. This says a lot about an organization that claims to be the primary defender of women when, in reality, they basically pick and choose whom to defend and whom to ignore.
When did it become so difficult to defend someone? If the leaders of NOW are going to pick and choose who they defend, then, they mine as well put a huge disclaimer on their website stating that they will only be defending women who believe in a liberal agenda because if you are a pro-life, conservative woman like myself, Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachmann, they do not give a damn.
Although I am a conservative Republican woman, I do not see party when one of my own is attacked. Regular readers of my blog know that I am not afraid to defend women on both sides of the political spectrum. It is clear women in politics are treated more harshly than their male counterparts. While questioning and criticizing someone based upon political beliefs is expected and welcomed, degrading someone and using sexual innuendos is disgusting. I get it, you get it, but apparently NOW does not, and I have a feeling that they never will. Perhaps NOW would be better off if it changed the name of its organization to National Organization for Liberal Women because that is the only spectrum of society it seems to represent.
